Steve, a former client and friend sent me this video. He is the one who taught me how to fish. We worked together on Wall Street. He ran his own hedge fund. One day, shortly after I had returned from India, and while I was going to coaching school at Georgetown, Steve called and said, “come into my office and show me what you learned.” I was confused..”Uhhhmm,.. I learned yoga and meditation.” To which he said, “yes, yes, whatever it is, you look peaceful. I need that.”
So I went into his office on Third Avenue in mid-town. Together we sat on his office floor and did some stretching and breathing exercises. Afterwards, he popped up and said, “I feel so good!” stretching his arms wide. Then unexpectedly, he handed me a check. “What is this for?” I asked. With tears in his eyes, he said, “well, you should be paid for your work..and what you’ll be doing in the world.”
I wasn’t sure what “the work” was but Steve allowed me to figure it out by becoming my first client. It was a gift beyond words to experience the unknown with another human being. To discover something new together, in complete wonderment and awe.
That was 2007. Since then I have birthed Sura Flow and Steve retired from Wall Street last year. He let go of his hedge fund and now volunteers for a non-profit at the Zen Center for Contemplative Care. He sits with people who are in hospice, who are in their last days of life, bearing witness to their experience.
What Maria so beautifully describes in this video, is the experience of what it is like to coach, create, help, heal.. one another. A gift when truly experienced, goes both ways. I was so deeply touched by her explanation of her work, it’s evolution and her realizations, I wanted to share it with you.
Let’s go fish together, in a whole new way..!
