Ever since I saw Brother Sun, Sister Moon, the story of St. Francis, I felt inspired to come to Assisi, Italy. Recently I attended a five day silent retreat at Simple Peace in the countryside of Assisi. I stayed in an elegant, yet simple room. Our days consisted of an hour of meditation morning, an hour at night, and an hour of yoga.
In our group retreat, we had people who had never meditated before. Sitting for a whole hour was really hard for them, but they showed up every day, committed to the practice and did great. I was surprised at how much clarity and insight I received on the retreat. Being in silence allowed me to more fully realize what’s important in my life. It’s easy to miss this in the everyday busyness of life.
One of the main life lessons I learn over and over again, is the importance of being present. When I get caught up in too much busyness and doing, I get caught up in my head. Life gets tight and stressful, but when I allow myself to drop into my body, take a breath, and experience spaciousness in the moment, life expands. The experience of presence allows us to more fully receive and enjoy life.
Here’s a tool I wanted to share with you that I’ve been using to be more engaged in the moment. This clip was taken at the top of ancient castle ruins overlooking Assisi, so I hope you enjoy the view!
Warm blessings from Assisi,
